Science says Dance is Medicine, Dancing Tango is also Poetry

Our brains are wired for rhythm, and dancing engages our entire nervous system. Some neuroscientists describe this full-body stimulation as a "neurochemical symphony," where anticipating a melody can trigger the release of dopamine and physical movement boosts endorphins.

The Neurocognition of Dance: Mind Movement and Motor Skills by Bettina Blasing, Martin Puttke, and Thomas Schack highlights these findings, demonstrating how crucial dance is for our well-being by linking mind and body.

In 1998, while wandering through downtown San Francisco, I stumbled upon the magic of Argentine Tango via the show Forever Tango. Captivated by the dance's sensual language, I began my tango journey in Santa Fe, NM, shortly after.

An increasing number of doctors are prescribing dance as a therapeutic activity. Particularly for neurological disorders like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, and stroke, dance improves balance, strength, and walking ability.

When a spinal injury threatened my ability to dance, I developed a therapeutic approach to teaching tango, emphasizing self-awareness, proprioception, and muscle fine-tuning for students with physical limitations.

For me, tango was an awakening of feminine sumptuousness, the feeling of limitlessness, and an invitation to deeply listen to both my partner and my heart. As captured in an excerpt from Love Language by Christina Johnson, "My toes soothe the wooden floor, stroking smoky burns left behind by your shoes. As you spread me over the dance floor, spilling rubies from my opened hands, careless diamonds from my shoulders.”

When we step onto the floor together, we shed old limits and let possibilities fall like gems from open hands.

We invite you to experience tango the way it is presented at the beautiful dance salon in Casa Sueño Azul, in Los Frailes. Classes begin in February 2026.
