A Gentle Dialogue with Your Horse’s Body & Nervous System

Your horse gives you so much — trust, presence, strength. But when they’re hurting, that partnership can feel fragile. Lameness, headshaking, behavioral changes, or a vague sense that “something’s off” often point toward a need for deeper healing.

Equine Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive way to listen to your horse’s body and help it find balance again. My name is Christina Johnson, a Trauma Informed Horsemanship Practitioner and Horse Priestess, and I bring over 25 years in the healing arts — plus specialized training in equine craniosacral work — to the horses I work with here in San Miguel de Allende and the surrounding Bajío area. My practice, however, has never been tied to one place. Over the years I’ve worked with horses across the United States, including Arizona, New Mexico, Mississippi, Louisiana, and other beautiful places. My approach is grounded in the teachings of Maureen Rogers, a pioneer in this field, and enriched by decades of my own study in biodynamic and visionary craniosacral therapy.

Here, we don’t force change. We listen, and we invite the body to let go.

“In Equine Craniosacral Work, presence is more important than a specific technique. Accurate technique is the discipline upon which presence is founded and built.”

What is Equine Craniosacral Therapy?

This work applies the same principles that have supported human health for nearly a century directly to the horse. It focuses on the subtle rhythms of cerebrospinal fluid, the membranes around the brain and spinal cord, and the interconnected bones of the skull, spine, and sacrum.

Using extremely light finger pressure, I listen to the cranial wave — the body’s own intelligent communication. Restrictions or imbalances in this system can affect nerve function, muscle tension, behavior, and performance. By gently supporting the horse’s body to release held patterns, we unlock its own deep capacity for healing.

I learned this art directly from Maureen Rogers, who teaches that the cranial wave is an intelligent language. Her work blends analytical understanding with intuitive listening. I’ve built on that foundation with my extensive human craniosacral training — Upledger, Milne Institute Visionary Craniosacral, and Biodynamic work with Georgia Milne — to create a uniquely integrated offering for your horse.

Conditions That Can Benefit from Equine Craniosacral Therapy

Because equine craniosacral work addresses the central nervous system and structural core, its effects can touch a wide range of issues. I’ve supported horses through:

  • TMJD (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction) — jaw discomfort, resistance to the bit, facial tension

  • Facial Nerve Paralysis & Headshaking

  • Head Injuries & Trauma — from falls, collisions, or accidents

  • Cranial Injuries — trauma to the poll, forehead, or eye socket

  • Blocked Tear Ducts

  • Kissing Spine — pain and resistance under saddle

  • Spinal & Hind End Injuries — restoring comfort and mobility after strain or impact

  • Stifle & Hock Issues

  • Lameness — especially when no clear structural diagnosis exists, or alongside veterinary care

  • Postural Imbalance

  • Post-Surgery Recovery — including colic surgery, castration, or orthopedic procedures

  • Roaring (Laryngeal Hemiplegia)

  • Cribbing & Behavioral Issues — often rooted in tension or unprocessed stress

  • Riding Issues — unexplained resistance, girthiness, difficulty bending

Craniosacral therapy complements veterinary care; it does not replace it.

Why Trust Your Horse’s Care to Christina Johnson?

Training with Maureen Rogers

  • My equine craniosacral education comes directly from one of the most respected teachers and pioneers in the field of Equine Craniosacral. Her emphasis on the cranial wave and the primacy of listening is the foundation of every session.

Three Decades of Hands-On Healing

  • I’ve spent over 30 years refining my touch, working with thousands of human and animal bodies. I understand the deep link between physical structure, the nervous system, and emotional well-being.

A Horseman’s Sensitivity

  • I meet your horse in their own environment — stall, paddock, or with a trusted handler — with no rush and no agenda. I read their signals, respect their timing, and let healing unfold at a pace they can integrate.

Local Roots, Wide Reach

  • I’m based in San Miguel de Allende and regularly serve private barns and equestrian properties throughout the region. I’ve also worked extensively with horses in Arizona, New Mexico, Mississippi, Louisiana, and other parts of the United States. If you’re outside this area, I invite you to reach out — travel and on-site work are absolutely possible.

Open to Travel — Wherever Your Horse
Calls Home

While my practice is based currently in San Miguel de Allende, I’m available to travel for equine craniosacral sessions at equine centers, private ranches, and barns around the world. Whether you have a single horse who needs attention or a whole barn that could benefit from this work, I’m glad to discuss what’s possible. Travel arrangements are straightforward, and I work closely with owners and managers to make each visit smooth and productive.

If you’re interested in hosting me for sessions in your area — anywhere in Mexico, the United States, or beyond — please get in touch. I’d love to hear about your horses and what they need.

What to Expect During a Session

Sessions run about 45–60 minutes at your horse’s location. I’ll place my hands gently on the head, poll, sacrum, or other listening stations and tune into the cranial rhythm.

You might see your horse yawn, lick and chew, drop their head, sigh, or stand in a peaceful, trance-like state. These are signs the nervous system is settling and the body is letting go. Many owners afterward report their horse moves more freely, feels softer in the bridle, or seems emotionally lighter.

We start with a free phone consultation so I can learn about your horse’s history and what you’re hoping for.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Craniosacral Therapy helps correct imbalances in the fluid and membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. This supports the body's natural healing system and can improve skeletal, muscular, and immune function, as well as brain activity and even behavior patterns. Horses often show noticeable improvements in movement, relaxation, and overall well-being after just one or two sessions

  • Unlike traditional physical therapies that focus on muscles and joints, CST works with the body's cerebrospinal fluid flow and deep internal rhythms. It uses a gentle, hands-on approach to encourage self-healing from within. This method is particularly effective because it reaches the deeper layers of the nervous system, promoting long-lasting balance and well-being.

  • The number of sessions varies depending on the individual horse and its condition. Some horses show significant improvement after just one or two sessions, while others may benefit from ongoing treatments for chronic issues or deeper imbalances. Christina will assess each horse individually to recommend the best approach for its needs.

A Note of Gratitude to Maureen Rogers
