Amistad: Two Generations, One Flowering Mexican HeartDos Generaciones, un Corazón Mexicano en Flor (Ep. 15)

Welcome to the Pan de Dios podcast with Christina Johnson.

This is our first bilingual episode. The first one I've recorded on my rooftop, with the castle behind us and the presa down below.

Today I'm with Cintia and Sophie.

I met Cintia because nobody could get my hair color right. Then she looked at me and said, you should not be a blonde. She worked and worked and made me a redhead. I met Sophie because of her facials. I've written a poem about them. They aren't just facials — they're a dreamtime world you always wanted to be in but could never quite get to.

One day I said to Cintia, don't you know Sophie? She didn't. I said to Sophie, don't you know Cintia? She didn't either.

So we got together in my living room with pastries and told chicken feet stories. And we laughed. And now look at us.

What happens when a woman in her seventies steps outside the box of "old white lady" and finds her favorite people are two high-energy Mexican women in their forties? This is that story.

We talk about gratitude. Learning to receive — which Sophie says I taught her. Día de Muertos, and the altars our grandmothers made, with the food that loses its taste after the souls have come. The mariachi song Maldito Amor, and how at the very end it turns into por tu bendito amor. For your blessed love. Because everything that happened, even the hard parts, turned out to be a blessing.

There's music. There's laughter. There might be tears.

Come sit with us.

Tampoco.
